The body of a girl who fell off of a boat in the Kaituma River on Thursday has been recovered.
The victim has been identified as 13-year-old Dellysa Ramitt, a student of North West Secondary School.
According to reports, on Thursday, December 21, Dellysa, her sister Michelle Ramitt, and brother-in-law Jairam Samsundar, were en route to their farm, situated in Lower Kaituma River mouth. The trio was aboard a wooden boat navigated by Samsundar.
At around 13.30 hours as the boat turned into the mouth of the Kaituma River, a passing boat generated a large wave causing the boat to list. Dellysa, who was seated at the bow, subsequently lost her balance and fell into the river.
The two other occupants in the boat attempted to rescue Dellysa, but their efforts were in vain. They immediately reported the incident to the Mabaruma Police Station and a search party was mobilized.
Dellysa’s lifeless body was eventually discovered later that evening.
Investigations are ongoing.
