Charles Dookram, a 56-year-old pedestrian, died following a collision with a motorcycle yesterday morning on Rupertee Access Trail in North Rupununi, Region Nine. The motorcyclist was arrested and is in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to a police press release, the incident occurred between 03:45 hrs and 04:00 hrs yesterday. It involved a motorcycle (with no registration number) driven by Alivius Junior John, a 22-year-old labourer of Annai village, North Rupununi, and Dookram of Aranaputa, North Rupununi.
The release said that at about 03:40 hrs yesterday, Wesley Roberts, the Vice Chairman of the Rupertee Community Policing Group was at home when he was awakened by a loud noise in the vicinity of his home. Roberts ventured outside and observed that someone was lying on the roadway in an unconscious state. He then realised that it was Dookram, who had injuries to his head and body. There was a motorcycle not far from him, along with John who was the rider.
The release said Dookram was picked up by Roberts and other public-spirited people and taken to the Annai Health Centre from where he was referred to the Lethem Regional Hospital. He died at the Lethem Hospital at about 09:35 hrs yesterday while receiving medical attention.
The motorcyclist fled the accident scene and was later arrested and placed in police custody.
