More than 1,600 individuals have been training in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), this year, according to the Department of Public Information (DPI).
The DPI press release said the training, which encompassed various facets of ICT, was facilitated by the Office of the Prime Minister’s Industry and Innovations Unit.
Basic community-level training has been conducted in regions two, three, four, five, six, and ten, the release said. Other areas include the Hinterland Train the Trainers initiative, ICT innovation Camps, Guyanese Girls Code, and Computer Literacy Skills Training for the Blind and Visually Impaired, it added.
With the understanding that ICT is an essential component of daily life globally, the DPI said, the unit continuously develops new platforms and initiatives to increase ICT usage and support Guyana’s socioeconomic growth.
The statement added that in the first half of the year, the government invested a total of $1.6 billion for the advancement of the ICT sector. This amount included a number of other significant projects, including the establishment of the national electronic identification system and the Guyana Coders Initiative, which was carried out in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates.
Further, the government has prioritised the building of resilient infrastructure to support the expansion of internet access, this with the necessary training.
The DPI noted that ICT hubs are being established in every region, complete with solar electric equipment. To date, the project has completed 110 hubs across the 10 administrative regions, and local residents are being trained to manage these hubs. Of the 110 hubs, 98 have been implemented.
“The ICT Access and E-Services for Hinterland, Poor and Remote Communities Project continues to live up to its mandate of providing ICT access and electronic services to these communities, throughout the country,” the release said.
