The Golden Jaguars will end the year ranked 157th following the official publication of the December FIFA Men’s Rankings Table.
The team’s position remains unchanged from the previous November standings, with 1018.14 points. Since their 0-2 defeat to Ethiopia on August 2nd in an international friendly, the Golden Jaguars have recorded five wins in as many competitive encounters. The Guyanese defeated Antigua and Barbuda [5-1, 6-0], the Bahamas [3-2], and Puerto Rico [3-1, 3-1] in League ‘B’ of the Concacaf Nations League to seal their promotion to League ‘A’.
They are currently sandwiched between 156th-ranked Singapore and 158th-placed Afghanistan. The Golden Jaguar’s best ever ranking was 86th, achieved in 2010, while their worst position was 185th in 2004. Overall, Guyana’s average ranking has been 151st.
The FIFA Men’s World Ranking, which was introduced in 1992, is a mechanism that was created to rank the competing nations in association football. As of April, Argentina is the number-ranked nation. The teams are ranked based on their respective game results in full FIFA-recognised international matches.
Eight countries, notably Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, have held the top spot.
Since August 2018, the ranking system has adopted the Elo rating structure, which is used in chess and is based on the strengths of the competing parties.
