Delon English, 26, of Lot 46 Rasville, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Delon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with armed robbery.
It was alleged that on December 20, while at Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, Georgetown, and while in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Rudolph Guard of two gold rings valued $240,000, a gold band valued $300,000 and $167,000 cash, for a total value of $707,000.
It was also alleged that on November 28, while in the company of others at Prashad Nagar, he robbed Chinese national, Qi Li Lin, of $8 million.
English pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor objected to bail citing the fact that the accused had been imprisoned before and served time for similar offence where he was sentenced for three years. Further, in all of his previous offences a firearm was used.
The court was also informed that the address given by the accused was incorrect.
English’s attorney told the court that the police shot his client in their pursuit to arrest him and assured the court that his client is not a flight risk and will attend his court dates. As such, he requested bail in a reasonable sum with imposed conditions.
Magistrate Bess, in arriving at his decision, told the court that he took into the account that although the offences are bailable he was aware of the seriousness of the charges along with the accused’s previous conviction and his sentence.
As such, he placed English on $700,000 bail for the armed robbery and $3 million for the robbery committed on Qi Li Lin.
His next court appearance will be on February 9 for the commencement of the hearing.
