A former policeman, John Moore, 23, of Second Front, East La Penitence, Georgetown, yesterday appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and was remanded over possession of a rifle, pistol and ammunition.
It was alleged that on December 30, 2023, Moore was at the East La Penitence squatting area where he had in his possession one Glock 40 pistol and one AR-15 rifle. He also had in his possession 19 live rounds of 233 ammunition and one 233 spent shell without being the holder of a licence.
Moore pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His defence attorney told the court that the guns and ammunition were not found on the accused but in another yard in another bag with an identification card of another person who was not presently before the court.
She also alleged that while Moore was in custody, he was assaulted by police and cuffed several times about his body. The attorney assured the court that if granted bail, her client was not a flight risk and would attend on his court dates.
The police prosecutor, however, objected to bail being granted, citing that Moore, a former police officer, ran during the arrest attempt. The court heard that on December 30 2023 around 10:15 am, acting on information received, ranks went to the East La Penitence squatting area where it was observed that Moore was in possession of the firearms. He was later seen throwing a haversack with the firearms into another yard.
The court was also told that while under caution, Moore admitted to the police that he was indeed in possession of the firearms and that the prosecution was in possession of video footage which shows Moore in possession of the firearms.
Based on the prosecution’s submissions, the magistrate denied Moore bail and he was remanded to prison until his next scheduled hearing on January 24.
