Speightland and DC Ballers secured their berths to the final in the women’s and men’s divisions respectively, when the ‘One Guyana’ King and Queen Beach Football Championship continued yesterday at the PPP office compound in Mackenzie, Linden.
Speightland downed Hururu 3-1 in the first semi-final of the women’s division to punch their ticket to the final. Nikita Wayne broke the deadlock for Speightland with a second-minute conversion. Christina Paul then doubled their lead, as she found the back of the net in the ninth minute. The fixture was effectively sealed as Wayne further increased her side’s lead, completing her double in the 17th minute.
On the other side, Nikisha Persaud recorded a consolation goal in the 20th minute. In the men’s semi-final segment, the DC Ballers squeaked past YMCA by a 2-1 score-line to earn their berth to the final. A Kendolph Lewis double secured the hard-fought outcome.
Lewis opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
He then made his presence felt once more, as he found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Shawn Wilson reduced the deficit for YMCA as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 17th minute. However, the DC Ballers backline thwarted the YMCA offensive line in the remaining minutes to seal the victory.
Meanwhile, tournament coordinator Stanley Lancaster, in a brief comment, said, “Thanks to President Irfaan Ali for his initiative to host the 2023/24 One Guyana King and Queen of the Sand football tournament here in Linden. For the second time, the opportunity is given to both males and females, especially the females, to showcase their skills on the sand in an event that is often never in the minds of those responsible. All are invited to witness the finals for the competition on Saturday, January 6th.”
