A 59-year-old man of Lot 2281 Section ‘A’, Block X, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, who allegedly  pretended to be a Loans Officer, appeared before Magistrate Delon Bess at the George-town Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was slapped with six fraud charges.

It is alleged that on November 26, 2023, at Charlestown, Georgetown, with the intent to defraud, Robert Bailey received the sum of $120,000 from Onika Nedd by falsely pretending that he was in a position to grant her a cash loan.

That between November 14 and 16, 2023, while in Georgetown with intent to defraud, he received the sum of $120,000 from Kevin Jew by also falsely pretending that he was in a position to grant him a cash loan.

That on November 30 and December 1, 2023, while in Georgetown, he received the sum of $85,000 by falsely pretending to be in the position of granting him a cash loan.

That between November 11 and 30, 2023, he received the sum of $221,000 from Oliver Lashley under the false pretence that he would purchase a motor car for him.

That on December 8, 2023, while at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, he received the sum of $100,000 from Anandie Blair by falsely pretending to be in position to grant her a cash loan, and on the same day, he received from Blair’s sister the sum of 150,000 under the same circumstance.

That on December 8, 2023, while at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he received from Javin Blair the sum of $150,000 under the false pretence of being able to grant him a cash loan.

The prosecutor objected to bail stating that the 59-year-old was no stranger to the court or police and that he was previously remanded and is presently before courts 8, 9, and 3, on similar charges.

The court also heard that Bailey was known to give false addresses to the police and the only way they were able to have him arrested was by a sting operation. Further, there are pending investigations into other matters of similar nature that he is involved in.

Notwithstanding the prosecutor’s arguments, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $900,000 with the conditions that he must report to the Brickdam police station and lodge his expired passport.

The matter was adjourned to February 9, 2024, for statements in the matter.
