(Trinidad Guardian) The autopsies on the bodies of Shevonne Moffat and Gemma Alexis have come back as inconclusive, and police will now await toxicology reports on the bodies.
The autopsies were done yesterday afternoon at this Scarborough General Hospital Mortuary.
The women were found dead in an apartment building in Moriah, Tobago, on December 27, 2023.
Police later confirmed to Guardian Media that both women were sisters.
A police report said Alexis was found lying on her back on a bed, with Mofatt next to her slumped to the side with her head resting on Alexis’ lap. There were no marks of violence on their bodies.
The sisters had planned on spending Christmas together and they were last seen on Christmas Eve by nearby neighbours. Their bodies were found partially decomposed by the landlord days later, after Moffat did not answer calls from him.
Mofatt had moved to Tobago years ago, after her mother was gunned down in Trinidad. A neighbour said days before her death, she said she was excited to spend some time with her sister from Trinidad for the holidays.
Speaking to Guardian Media yesterday, Mofatt’s uncle, Derrick Aberdeen, said although the family doesn’t share close ties with her sister, they have decided to work with Alexis’ family to arrange to have them buried together.
Aberdeen said, “Many of us still have doubt that Shevonne would take her life. I was looking forward to getting a firm answer from the autopsy. Seeing it is inconclusive have me speechless, that’s not the closure I was hoping for.
“We really hoped it would have showed us how she died. But now we just want to put them to rest because it’s a difficult process for the family and close friends.”
Following the autopsies, their bodies were taken to Trinidad yesterday evening, where they will be buried in the coming days.
Investigations into their deaths are ongoing.
