In what can only be described as a major upset, Monedderlust of Berbice overcame tournament favourite Slingerz FC of West Demerara 1-0 to win the Elite League Playoff yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Brentnol Frank’s conversion in the fourth minute separated the two teams. Latching onto the ball inside the right of the penalty area, Frank uncorked a powerful strike that settled into the lower right corner despite custodian Akel Clarke getting a hand to the ball.
This lead would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval. On the other side, the West Demerara outfit almost equalised in the 61st minute, as Simeon Moore, after receiving a cross from the left side inside the centre of the penalty area, blasted his effort onto the crossbar, much to the disbelief of the large gathering.
The Berbicians would continue to thwart the disjointed Slingerz offensive line to secure the result. With the outcome, Monedderlust punched their ticket to the 2024 Elite League Championship, which is pencilled to start in February.
On the other hand, Slingerz will face off against Elite League outfit Victoria Kings in an eliminator match, with the winner also earning the final berth in the competition.
On the individual side of the presentation, Raynel Frank of Monedderlust copped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Goalkeeper titles, respectively. Also, veteran forward Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams of the Beacons walked away with the Highest Goal Scorer accolade with seven conversions.
