Anthony Wong, 38, of Lot 369 Grove, East Bank Demerara, and 40 year old Basdeo Omadat (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with simple larceny.
It is alleged that on Thursday at Eping Avenue, Bel Air Park they stole one garbage bin, valued $68,400, property of Cevon’s Waste Management.
The facts revealed by the prosecutor stated that about 2:00 pm on the day, a staffer of Roraima Airways went to use the bin and discovered it was missing.
After checking the security camera an identifiable male was seen removing the bin from its place. As a result, the city police conducted a search and acting on information went to Bourda where they met Wong who was told of the allegation and he admitted to the offence. In court, Wong pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to nine months imprisonment. The magistrate informed Wong that the penalty for simple larceny is 3 years imprisonment, however, due to him not wasting the court’s time and his honesty he was spared the full sentence.
His co-accused, Omadat, who pleaded guilty with an explanation, told the magistrate that he works in waste management, and continuously denied the allegation of being complicit in the crime. An emotional Omadat said he only empties bins and that Wong approached him with the already filled bin and told him to empty it, and he was only doing as told. Wong concurred with Omadat’s explanation saying that he [Omadat] was in no way involved with the stealing of the bin nor did he have the knowledge that it was a stolen item. The magistrate rejected Omadat’s guilty plea and granted him bail in the sum of $30,000. Omadat’s matter was adjourned to February 5 2024, for statements and fixture.
