A fire of unknown origin ripped through a two-storey wooden and concrete house at Lot 481 Kiskadee Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown, yesterday afternoon leaving a mother and her three children homeless.

There were no injuries reported. The mother noted that the contents of her home were destroyed in the fire.

Abigail Lynch, the occupant of the home and mother of three who was not home at the time of the fire, told Stabroek News that sometime yesterday afternoon, around 2:30 pm, she received a call from her neighbour, informing her of the fire at her home, prompting her to rush to the scene. Lynch said that she and her three children reside in the five-bedroom home.

She disclosed that she lost millions in the fire as the home was well furnished. “Everything burnt completely in the home; refrigerator, gas stove, washing machine, microwave, chair set, beds, wardrobe, televisions; everything is gone.” She noted that the Fire Service informed her that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Ruth Hernandez of Lot 480 Kiskadee Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Lynch’s neighbour who contacted her about the fire, related that she could not say what time the fire started because she didn’t check the time but surmised that it may have been around two in the afternoon.

“I can’t say exactly what happened, I just know that there was a fire. I was in my home when I heard the kids screaming in my yard. I rushed out my home to see what had happened, and after being informed by the kids of a fire next door, I then call the Fire Service followed by the children’s mother and my husband. The Fire Service took a while to come but eventually the GFS arrived and put the fire out.” She noted that a PVC gutter on her home was scorched as a result of the heat from the fire of origin.

Marcia Fields, another resident recalled that yesterday afternoon, she came out of her home and saw fire and smoke emanating from her neighbour’s house situated not far up the road from hers. She could not say what could have caused the fire, but was thankful the three children escaped. She remembers walking towards the house on fire and looking on helplessly. She opined that the house could have been saved as the Fire Service took a while to get into action at the scene.

The mothers and her three children are currently staying at relatives.
