Motorcyclist Premdat Govinda, 52, yesterday died in a mishap on the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The circumstances of his death are unclear and an investigation is underway.
Stabroek News was able to speak with the wife of the deceased, Rohini Govinda. She said that her husband, a father of four, was reportedly en route to his residence at Bella Dam, Pouderoyen when the incident occurred. The distraught woman recounted, “The police informed us that he fell and struck his head between two steel structures on the bridge. It seemed like he tumbled, and his head made contact with the space between the two iron.”
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Public Works posted a release on its Facebook page informing of the incident.
“We regretfully notify you of an incident at the Demerara Harbour Bridge today which resulted in the death of a male rider. The incident occurred at approximately 12.55 hours as the rider was proceeding west on the bridge. Thus far, there is no evidence of a collision, or that any other person or vehicle was involved in the incident. The rider has been identified and his family is being notified, as such his identity will not be released at this time. The police are also investigating the matter.
“The Management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) expresses our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“We urge commuters to proceed with caution and to look out for other users of the bridge.”
