Taxi driver, Delon Bristol, 31, of Lot 36 Archer Street, East Canje, Berbice, appeared before Magis-trate Delon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday where he was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on January 9, while on George Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, a taxi driven by Bristol, was intercepted by police ranks and a subsequent search unearthed 11.68 grams of cannabis.
Bristol pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit officers intercepted a Toyota Allion HB 5617. When the vehicle was searched, hidden in the trunk behind a false wall was the 11.68 grams of cannabis in four small black plastic bags.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the method of concealment
However, Bristol’s defence attorney argued that his client who is a taxi driver, was at the Berbice car park where he was approached by a man wanting to travel to Ber-bice. He then waited for his car to have the full complement of passengers before contacting the man who asked to be picked up from another location. The attorney stated that the bag which the officers found belonged to that passenger.
In response, the prosecutor told the court that at the time the car was intercepted, Bristol was the only occupant.
Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned to February 01 for statements.
