According to the police, enquiries disclosed that the driver of the car was proceeding east along the Mon Repos Road. The driver told the police that he saw a man run from north to south across the road, with a cup in his hand and into the path of his vehicle. The driver said that by the time he could have applied brakes, the vehicle struck the pedestrian.
The impact of the collision caused the pedestrian to be flung into the air. Viramthu was examined and pronounced dead at the scene. The body was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and the results showed a reading of .006 micrograms.
Andrew’s sister, Sumin Viramthu, related to this newspaper that her brother along with other relatives and friends were at a bar located not too far from the Mon Repos public road. She said that a friend who was at the bar at the time said that the accident occurred when her brother was crossing the road in order to part a fight.
She explained that according to the CCTV footage which she viewed, the driver of the car was in the wrong since the video shows her brother hurrying to cross the road.
She said that in September, 2023 Viramthu’s home was destroyed by a fire at 105 Martyrs Ville.
