Former police detective, Ron Fletchman, 46, of Lot 38 Melanie, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with possession of ammunition without a licence.
It was alleged that on January 13, he had in his possession at his home, one round of .223 ammunition and one round of 9mm ammunition.
Fletchman plead not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, Fletchman and two other persons, wheelchair-bound Andre Clarke and an 18-year-old (name withheld) were all together in Fletchman’s house on Norton Street, Georgetown. Acting on information, ranks proceeded to the house, and a search was conducted in the presence of the occupants. The 9mm ammunition was found in the kitchen, Fletchman was asked if he was the holder of a firearm licence to which he responded “no.” A search was then conducted on him and the .223 ammunition was discovered in his possession. He subsequently admitted ownership saying, “It belongs to me.”
The prosecutor objected to bail citing the nature and prevalence of the offence.
Fletchman’s defence attorney told the court that his client, who is a former detective, had an injury which left him unable to walk on his own and questioned why the 18-year-old and Clarke were released but his client remained in custody. He also requested that the body cam footage from the CANU ranks be shown to the court and denied that anything was found in his client’s pockets. He also informed the court that his client does not live at the house where the ammunition was found.
The attorney asked the court to grant his client bail since his foot was badly damaged.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus concurred and granted bail in the sum of $100,000.
The case has been adjourned to February 21 for statements.
