The Mash Street-ball Championship is pencilled to commence on February 18th at the National Park Thomas Lands, with 16 teams slated to battle for over $1,000,000 in prizes in the one-day competition.
This was disclosed in an official release from the tournament organiser, Edison Jefford. According to the correspondence, the winning team will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, with the runner-up collecting $250,000 and the respective trophy. Similarly, the third- and fourth-place finishers will receive $150,000 and $100,000, respectively, alongside the corresponding accolade.
To date, several teams have confirmed their participation. Amongst them are: Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Back Circle, Bent Street, Stabroek Ballers, Team Cruel, Family, Five-0, North East La Penitence, and Sophia. The date for the official launch of the championship will be announced shortly.
According to Jefford, the resulting response from the competing teams forced the coordinating crew to increase the number of participants from its initial to its current number, noting, “I was left with no choice since team representatives were calling me asking to be included in the tournament, and because these were teams that previously supported my past tournaments, I felt compelled to accede to their request.”
“We believe that the teams will welcome that new format because of its brevity. This is the direction sports are taking right now; you must look at the popularity of Twenty20 cricket to understand what is taking place right now,” he further stated.
Jefford stated that he aims to mirror the ambiance of the season and the previous editions of the tournament, noting that he envisions a competitive rivalry, which has been a hallmark of this format. He further thanked the corporate community as well as the Guyana Police Force and Commissioner Clifton Hickens (Ag) for their unwavering support.
