Comprehensive approach needed to Mahdia CoI findings

Dear Editor,

Finally, the awaited CoI Report into the deadly fire is out and from all accounts two officers, in the main  are being held responsible, one moreso than the other, their actions, or lack thereof, being deemed dereliction of duties. So, does this dereliction of duties constitute cause for further investigation?

But reading further, the dereliction of duties is not attributed to one government, since both governments are guilty of dereliction of duties based on the findings and recommendations on investigations commissioned and reports submitted.

Neither government can claim superior conduct in the core issue of taking and doing all that was necessary to avoid the devastating outcome in the Mahdia fire.

The political tit-for-tat pointing of fingers and countering accusations is unhelpful and achieves nothing.  A comprehensive, holistic approach to the CoI’s findings and recommendations into this dark day in our country is what is needed to ensure such an occurrence is never seen again.

Yours faithfully,

Shamshun Mohamed
