Dear Editor,
It seems that on a daily basis, we are constantly bombarded with reasons why we are frustrated with our politicians. Just this week an opposition Member of Parliament shouted the quintessential dog whistle in parliament that the government wants to establish a “caste system in Guyana.” The common phrase, “how low can you go” comes to mind. A minister in the government released documentation showing that several members of the last administration secured exorbitant sums of monies for themselves and family members. One minister got hundreds of thousands of U.S dollars for herself and her son for their education expenses. So, it seems that both parties are guilty of enriching their friends and families. An opposition Member of Parliament revealed that there are numerous diplomatic posts that are unfilled, including to India. This affirms the suspicion that the PPP did not win the last election because they were better. They won because the other party was worse.
Sincerely,
Chitrakha Persaud
