Thirty-four-year-old Ryan Perez appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with possession of firearm and ammunition without a licence.
It was alleged that between January 21 and 22, while in the Northwest District, Region One, Perez had in his possession a 12-gauge shotgun and 3 cartridges of 12-gauge ammunition.
He pleaded guilty to the offence.
It was alleged that on Sunday, January 21, Perez went to a shop owned and operated by John Adams and was seen with the gun.
The following day at about 09:00 hours he returned to the same shop, handed John Adams the gun and cartridges, and left.
Adams contacted the police who subsequently arrested Perez. He admitted to the possession of the gun and ammunition in a taped interview and stated that he had given them to Adams for safekeeping.
Perez told the court that he uses the gun to go hunting to support his family. Previously a miner, he revealed that hunting is his primary source of income and he supports his family with the money he gets from selling the meat of animals that he hunts.
Magistrate Isaacs refused bail and requested that a probation report be done and presented to the court on February 16.
