Seventh-day Adventists across Guyana can now benefit from access to quality financial services, as the Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists has been officially registered as a Co-operative Credit Union.

It is the first Co-operative Credit Union to be registered in the past few years, a release yesterday from the Ministry of Labour said.

Co-operative Credit Unions, which are registered under the Co-operative Societies Act, Chapter 88:01 of the Laws of Guyana, are co-operative societies which enable and assist their members in saving and borrowing money at reasonable rates.

The release said that the registration of this new Co-operative Credit Union means that Adventists can now access low interest rates, various loan services and special savings, while fostering self-reliance, and economic and financial development.

They can also access special burial benefits, including financial contributions towards funerals, and help with funeral arrangements.

Through these and other endeavours, the Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. aims to become the church’s premier credit union, the release said.

The union was certified on Thursday afternoon by Chief Co-operatives Development Officer,  Janaknauth Panchu, in the presence of other staff members from the Ministry of Labour’s Co-operatives and Friendly Societies Department.

They were represented by Secretary, Colette Bryan, Treasurer, Laurel Boodie, and Committee Members: Suelin Gibbs, Andray Thomas, Carl De Mattos, Jack Farley, Collette Clemenson, and Dennis Hamilton.
