A man wanted by the police in relation to complaints of simple larceny, larceny from the person, assault and break and enter larceny, was yesterday shot in the foot by the police while being arrested at Plastic Bag Street, Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to a police press release, the wanted man, Denzil Thomas called “Eggie” was found lying in a yard around 06:00 hrs yesterday by members of the anti-crime patrol, who had gone to Plastic Bag Street, based on information they received.

The release said the ranks approached Thomas, told him of the allegations and cautioned him, but he resisted arrest. According to the police, Thomas behaved in a disorderly manner (abusing, pushing and threatening language) while ranks tried to escort him out of the yard. In the process too, the release said, he attempted to relieve Constable Parks of his service firearm from his waist.

The police said Thomas then went to a utility pole on the street, picked up a knife and charged towards Constable Parks. He was warned, but continued towards Constable Parks and Lance Corporal Phillips discharged one round in Thomas’s direction, hitting him on the right foot. Thomas fell to the ground and the ranks managed to subdue him and took his knife away, police said.

He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, the release said, where he was examined, treated and discharged. He was thereafter taken to the Whim Police Station and placed in custody, the release said.
