A major Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card is set to kick off on March 23 as the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMF) seeks to further promote the sport with their first fully-sanctioned event in the last seven years.
The upcoming MMA competition was launched yesterday at the Pegasus Suites with GMMF President Gavin Singh and executives in attendance.
The octagon complete with cage will be set up at the Pegasus Hotel, and the Pro-Am (Professional/Amateur) card will feature at least 14 bouts with the GMMF looking to increase that number to a possible 16 fights.
While the GMMF is yet to name the card, it will feature international action with athletes expected from Brazil, St Lucia, Suriname, the USA and Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, President of the Pan Am Mixed Martial Arts Federation (MMAF), Jason Fraser pointed out that the upcoming card will be key in helping to put Guyana on the map in terms of a MMA destination.
Fraser revealed that a few titles will be on the line inclusive of Keron Bourne who will be defending his Ruff and Tuff Title, while there is a possibility of a women’s fight. GMMF’s Singh also told the media that former UfC fighter turned referee, Herb Dean will officiate the event further adding to the international fight card setting.
Singh also thanked the Pegasus Hotel, Mohamed’s Enterprise, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and others for their role in sponsoring the event.
Singh revealed that the GMMF will be hosting their official certification programme ahead of the fight night at the Pegasus Hotel, set for March 21.
