Guyana’s air defence capacity was among areas discussed with a visiting US Air Force Major General.
The US Embassy said in a statement that Major General Evan Pettus, the 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern) met on Friday with Guyana’s Prime Minister, Mark Phillips, National Security Advisor Gerry Gouveia, and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff Brigadier Omar Khan to discuss areas of mutual interest building on the U.S.-Guyana security partnership.
The U.S.-Guyana partnership focuses on a range of areas including countering transnational criminal organizations, maritime security, disaster preparedness, humanitarian assistance, and human rights, the statement said, adding that the United States is committed to working with its partners to advance a secure and prosperous Guyana and region.
The US Embassy also thanked Brigadier Khan for facilitating vital discussion on advancing Guyana’s air defence capacity and aviation capabilities with the Major General.
During the discussion, Pettus said “regional security is good for Guyana and the United States”. Khan emphasized that “partnership is the foundation for collective security across the region.”
The US Embassy said that Pettus’ visit underscores the continued importance Washington places on the U.S.-Guyana defence and security partnership and both countries’ shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
The visit was the latest in a series of high-level contacts between the GDF and the US Southern Command.
