Mahaica Determinators and Buxton Stars recorded penalty kick victories to seal quarterfinal berths when the East Coast Mash Cup Football Championship commenced on Friday night at the Golden Grove Community Centre ground.
Mahaica Determinators overcame Anns Grove 7-6 on sudden death penalty kicks after regulation time ended 2-2. Prior to the aforesaid conclusion, Mahaica stormed to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Lennox Cort opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Julia Hamilton etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 30th minute to double their advantage.
However, it proved to be a game of two halves as Anns Grove recorded two unanswered goals to restore parity to the encounter.
Kevon Gooding reduced the deficit with a 51st-minute conversion before Courtney O’Dean equalised at full time via a 90th-minute strike.
Similarly, the Buxton Stars squeaked past Pouderoyen 5-4 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended scoreless. The West Demerara outfit sealed their exit as their final penalty taker missed from a distance.
The event, which is pencilled to conclude on February 17th, features 16 clubs competing in an elimination format for over $1,000,000 in prizes. The competition continues today at the same venue.
