A fire on Saturday has caused major damage to the Albion Estate control room, reportedly leaving the factory with over $50 million in losses.
While estate officials have remained silent on the matter, Stabroek News was told that the fire, suspected to be electrical in origin, occurred on Saturday morning, and quickly spread throughout the control room before it was eventually put out. In the process the fire was able to destroy and damage a number of specialized equipment. In order to ensure the Albion Estate stays on course with the other estates countrywide, which are expected to commence grinding in the first week of March, Stabroek News was told that emergency purchase of the equipment which were damaged will have to be carried out so as to return the control room to operation.
Sources yesterday said that the estate would be unable to operate without the control room in working capacity. These sources s
urmised that the total loss is expected to be over $50 million.
