A Columbia, Region Two labourer yesterday succumbed to injuries suffered after falling from a scaffold at Imam Bacchus and Sons limited at Affiance, Pomeroon/Supenaam.
On Friday, January 9, at about 12:45 pm, Domindra Narayan fell from a 10-foot scaffold whilst he was pressure washing the exterior of the facility and landed on the concrete. He was picked up and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was admitted with head injuries. He later succumbed.
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officer Naipaul Persaud with responsibility for Region Two is currently investigating the incident. The Region’s labour officer, Ravi Persaud, is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A release from the Ministry of Labour had said that Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton expressed his concern about workers being injured on the job. He emphasised the need for workplace safety and health practices so that employees can be safe at work.
Hamilton noted that his ministry, through its OSH Department, is aggressively tackling unsafe workplace conditions and unsafe work practices through inspections and audits to reduce the number of accidents that occur.
The Columbia community is in shock at Narayan’s death.
