The Demerara women’s team yesterday crushed their Essequibo counterparts by 185 runs in the opening encounter of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Senior Female Inter-County 50-over competition which bowled off at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground on Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
Demerara who batted first, had their winning foundation laid through the individual brilliance of Mandy Mangru (81 off 82) and skipper Cherry-Ann Fraser (68 off 52) while Latisha Jordan (4-16) and Nya Latchman (4-25) turned in lethal spells in a crushing victory.
The Demerara Women made 273 all out from 41.5 with a whopping 60 of their total by virtue of extras as Yonette Welcome with 3-48 and Nikesha Narine 2-65 shared the majority of the wickets between them. Essequibo limped to 88 all out from 22 overs in response with Lavina Ragobeer managing 21 while Analesia D’Aguiar was the next best with 16 as 31 extras also helped their cause. Latisha Jordan’s 4-16 was the pillar of Demerara’s bowling effort while Nya Latchman’s 4-25 reinforced her side’s dominance.
The competition will continue tomorrow with Essequibo against Berbice at the Meten-Meer-Zorg ground, West Coast Demerara, followed by the final round between Demerara and Berbice on February 13 at Malteenoes. Games will start at 09:30 am daily.
The 50-over tournament will be followed by the T20 segment, with all matches slated for Malteenoes starting at 1:30 pm on match days.
