Monedderlust and Cougars secured their semi-final berths in the East Coast Mash Football Cup following quarter-final victories on Saturday evening at the No. #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
Cougars defeated the Mahaica Determinators 1-0. Ryan Rose recorded the only conversion in the 44th minute. Rose, upon racing away from the final defender, slammed his effort into the back of the net from inside the penalty area.
Meanwhile, Monedderlust overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat the Fruta Conquerors 3-2. Falling behind to a Makhaya Jervis strike in the 21st minute, Monedderlust equalised in the form of Stephon Moore eight minutes onward.
They then took the lead in the 35th minute, as Ntini Bobb found the back of the net. The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. However, Fruta Conquerors restored parity to proceedings upon the resumption of play, as Jervis secured his brace in the 50th minute.
Nonetheless, any hopes of a Fruta Conquerors win were quickly extinguished by the home side, as Paul McDonald netted the go-ahead winner in the 60th minute.
The semi-final round will commence on Thursday at the Golden Grove Ground, East Coast Demerara. Buxton Stars will oppose the Cougars at 18:00 hours, while Buxton United will lock horns with Monedderlust at 20:30 hours.
The winner of the tournament will receive $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up will pocket $250,000 and the corresponding accolade. On the other hand, the third and fourth-place finishers will receive $150,000 and $100,000, respectively, and the respective trophy.
