Man gets seven years for killing nephew in 2018

An Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara man who was reported to have strangled his nephew has been sentenced to seven years behind bars, less time served.

Back in 2018, Ganesh Persaud Lall was charged with the murder of his nephew Jason Rajendra Paul Hira.

At his recent indictment before the High Court, Lall denied the murder charge when it was read to him, but admitted guilt to the lesser count of manslaughter.

His sentence was imposed by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who ordered that from the seven years imposed, deductions be made for the period the offender spent on remand awaiting trial.

Background

Police had said that Lall from the inception had always admitted to killing his nephew.

Hira, 30, resided with Lall and his grandparents at Anna Catherina.

Sometime around 6 am on the day in question, Hira was discovered lifeless by his grandmother in their washroom.

In a press statement, the Guyana Police Force had said, “investigators discovered marks of violence around the deceased’s neck.”

An autopsy would later that he died from compression injuries to the neck.

A subsequent statement had said that Lall admitted to strangling Hira.

This newspaper at the time was told that Hira and his uncle had disputes from time to time.

It was also noted that Hira was arrested on a few occasions after having brushes with the law for minor offences.
