The Lady Jaguars failed to qualify for the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup, losing 0-1 to the Dominican Republic yesterday in the preliminary round at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, United States.
Guyana’s starting XI comprised Chante Sandiford, Rylee Traicoff, Jenea Knight, Kristen Bettencourt, Anya Tribune, Brianne Desa, Stefanie Kouzas, Otesha Charles, Jalade Trim, Annalisa Vincent, and Shanice Alfred.
Following a scoreless first-half period, the match was decided by a solitary conversion from Kathryn Gonzalez in the 55th minute.
In terms of statistics, the Dominican Republic was the superior side. In terms of attempts, they outshot Guyana 19-5, eight of which were on target in comparison to the Lady Jaguars one.
They also recorded 56% and tallied 363 passes, while Guyana amassed 287 passes. The Dominican Republic also tallied 12 corner kicks, compared to Guyana’s five.
The Lady Jaguars qualified for the playoff section of the event after topping Group A in League B of the qualification tournament. Guyana ended with a record of five wins and a loss.
A win for the Lady Jaguars would have sealed their appearance in the tournament and placed them alongside hosts the United States, Mexico, and Conmebol outfit Argentina in Group A.
