Four persons have been rendered homeless after a fire on Sunday at Agatash, Region Seven  which is believed to have been maliciously set.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday said that the Bartica Fire Station swiftly responded to a distress call at Agatash Squatting Area where the fire ravaged a wooden and concrete building on Sunday morning.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 8.11 am and arrived at the site at 8.19 am. Led by leading firemen Hyderkhan and Innis, supported by a team of seven, the firefighters battled the flames.

The fire which GFS said was suspected to have been maliciously set, quickly engulfed the property owned by Romona Primus.

Occupants Lucille King, Aston Simmons, Atalia Simmons, and Abraham Simmons were left homeless as the fire consumed the structure and its contents.

Two jets working from water tender #98 in relay with water bowser #11 were used to quell the flames.

Additionally, a two-storey wooden and concrete building also owned by Primus suffered damage due to radiated heat from the building of origin resulting in approximately 11m x 15m of PVC guttering being destroyed.

In addition to the structural damage, four black tanks were also destroyed by the time the fire was extinguished.

Investigations into the fire are ongoing.
