LAHORE, Pakistan, CMC – West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein grabbed an important brace of wickets to help his Quetta Gladiators to a five-wicket win over Carlos Brathwaite’s Lahore Qalanders in the Pakistan Super League here yesterday.
The 30-year-old Hosein picked up two for 17 from four excellent overs to help limit Qalanders to 187 for seven off their 20 overs at Gaddafi Stadium, with former West Indies Twenty20 captain Brathwaite managing only six.
In reply, West Indies white-ball left-hander Sherfane Rutherford failed with 14 but Gladiators overhauled their target with five balls to spare.
Khawaja Nafay, a 22-year-old right-hander, top-scored with an unbeaten 60 off 31 balls, posting 29 for the third wicket with captain Rilee Rossouw (18), 29 for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed (11) and 34 for the fifth wicket with Rutherford.
Nafay, who punched four fours and three sixes, then saw Gladiators over the line in a 24-run, unbroken sixth wicket stand with Hosein (nine not out).
Saud Shakeel (40) had earlier given the run chase a healthy platform by putting on 69 off 41 balls for the first wicket with Jason Roy (24).
Choosing to bat first, Qalanders, were carried by opener Sahibzada Farhan’s 62 off 43 deliveries, the right-hander adding 53 for the second wicket with Rassie van der Dussen (15) and a further 37 for the third wicket with Abdullah Shafique (11).
Jahandad Khan provided the energy at the back end with a 17-ball unbeaten 45, putting on 45 for the fifth wicket with Sikandar Raza (18).
