Following his recent resignation as the head coach of West Demerara powerhouse Slingerz FC, former Golden Jaguars international Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard has confirmed his appointment with West Ruimveldt heavyweight Western Tigers for the impending Elite League season.
This was disclosed during an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. According to Pollard, who is in his second stint with the Tigers, “I have been appointed since Sunday, and I think I have a good relationship with the players and the management staff. It’s a community that loves football, and they welcomed me back with open arms. It’s a place I feel comfortable, and going back there was like a movie waiting to start.”
Pollard, who is also an assistant coach to the Golden Jaguars senior programme, secured Elite League status for the Vergenoegen-based Slingerz outfit following their 1-0 eliminator victory against the Victoria Kings. The team was required to contest an eliminator after losing unexpectedly to Monedderlust via the identical aforesaid score in the final of the Elite League Playoff Championship.
Asked if he is relishing the prospect of facing off against his former club, Pollard said that his primary objective will be to perform credibly during the Elite League campaign and that he harbours no ill will towards his former employers.
He explained, “Everyone has to play with each other; when the day comes, we will play. I’m not studying them. I think Slingerz and I have a good relationship, and the breakup was not bad, and it was for the betterment of the club. I had to step away. Every game is a tough one, and we want to give a good show. If our performance takes us to the top of the league, that’s good, but we are not focusing on any specific team. I think this league will be one of the more competitive leagues.”
