The most likely transport method of Guyana supplying CARICOM’s gas needs is by way of LNG tankers

Dear Editor,

Your article, President unveils big gas plans, Stabroek News, Tuesday, February 20, 2024, refers.

Of interest in this article is this extract, “Speaking at the Marriott Hotel where the conference is being held under the theme, Fueling Transformation and Modernization, “Ali unfolded varying parts of a master plan for the country’s oil and gas which include supply and logistics. According to Ali Guyana is looking to supply CARICOM’s Gas needs”.

In my opinion the most likely transport method of Guyana supplying CARICOM’s Gas needs is by way of LNG tankers. I bore that out in my letter, Community awareness and proper gas-to-shore feasibility at Bush Lot’s EPA consultation were lacking, Stabroek News May 12, 2022, an extract of which read, “Many letters from persons knowledgeable of the Oil and Gas Industry have advocated the use of LNG tankers instead of pipeline. The commonsense metrics of safety and security appear to be so obvious. The flexibility of LNG tankers offers a distinct advantage in that the very tankers can be used to transport gas to foreign customers to fulfill these markets”.

I cannot envisage Guyana supplying CARICOM’s Gas needs by way of pipelines. As such, did Guyana need the formidable financial, environmental, safety, and security burden of a gas-to-shore pipeline, a project with a feasibility of only 25 years, when LNG tankers would have offered the flexibility of transporting the gas on shore to Guyana and fulfilling its CARICOM’s needs? Looked like someone put the cart before the horse.

Sincerely,

Abraham David
