The $250,000 Laing Avenue Housing Grant was disbursed to approximately 30 households on Tuesday, a release from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) said.
The recipients were presented their vouchers at the St. Pius Primary School in Georgetown by the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal; Chief Executive Officer of the CH&PA, Sherwyn Greaves; and CH&PA’s Deputy Director of Community Development, Donell Bess-Bascom.
This complements the initial distribution to sixty families in late January 2024, in line with Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo’s commitment last November to uplift their living standards.
Croal emphasized that these grants are part of the government’s multifaceted approach to encourage homeownership, including initiatives like the Steel and Cement Housing Subsidy vouchers and the home construction programme.
The CEO highlighted that the programme will positively impact residents’ lives and serve as a model for future national housing initiatives. Beneficiaries also expressed gratitude to the government for the vouchers, recognizing them as a transformative initiative.
“I think it’s a good initiative and I think everybody should be able to capitalize on it, all those in need,” said one of the beneficiaries, Renwick McDonald.
Sandra Primo, who is facing mobility challenges due to a hip injury, expressed gratitude for the assistance. She stated that it would be used for upgrading her sanitary facility, as she currently uses an outdoor toilet. Primo said this would also benefit her son and grandchild currently residing with her.
