Andrew Marks, a 27-year-old vendor of Jackson Street, Tucville, was arrested on Friday last and charged yesterday with possession of a firearm without licence and possession of ammunition without a licence.
In a statement, the police said that Marks appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court #1 before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce where the two charges were read to him, and he pleaded not guilty. He was remanded to prison, and the matter was adjourned to 25th March 2024.
Marks was arrested at around 01:45 hrs on Friday last by Police ranks who were on duty at the ‘Splash-A-Mani’ show which was being held at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Marks, who was at the show, was wearing a black jersey and blue pants, and acting suspiciously. On seeing the police, he started to run in a southern direction and jumped a nearby fence.
The ranks gave chase and Marks then jumped into a nearby trench, where he was caught by the cops. The Police took him out of the trench, after which a search was conducted on his person and he was found with a firearm in his pants crotch. The firearm was examined and was found to be a 9 mm pistol, with one magazine and 16 live matching rounds.
