The defending champion, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), opened their Elite League campaign in an ideal manner, defeating Santos 2-1 on Sunday evening at the National Training Centre in Providence.
GDF opened the scoring in the 42nd minute as Ryan Hackett netted, cutting into the penalty area before uncorking a powerful left-footed strike into the back of the net.
The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Upon the resumption, Malcolm Miggins converted from the penalty spot to double the GDF’s advantage in the 58th minute.
Santos eventually recorded a consolation goal in the 78th minute as Ryan Dowding etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, slotting into the back of the net after receiving a squared pass from the left side.
