In a memorandum to education officers, Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain yesterday notified that absences by striking teachers must continue to be logged as he insisted that the government will not pay educators for the days that they did not work.
Justice Sandil Kissoon last week debarred the government from deducting pay from striking teachers until the hearing of the substantive case brought by the Guyana Teachers’ Union against the government.
In his memo yesterday, Hussain said: “To be clear, the orders made by Justice Kissoon are temporary. The Government of Guyana will not pay teachers for the days that they did not work. We are advised that a final order from the court is expected to be made accordingly and consequently the information collected…will be utilized to determine teachers’ salaries”.
He said that the Ministry of Education has received from each of the 11 education districts a list of teachers who were absent from their schools without prior permission or leave up to Wednesday February 21, 2024.
“You are required to continue collecting this data daily and submit to your respective Regional Executive Officer” and copy to the office of the Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration).
