The Golden Jaguars hopes of qualifying from Group B in the CONCACAF U20 Qualifiers for the championship segment were extinguished, as they suffered a crushing 1-4 loss to Suriname yesterday at the Antigua and Barbuda Training Centre.
Fresh off their 2-2 draw with El Salvador at the same venue on Sunday, Guyana’s starting XI comprised Emmanuel Lewis, Tyler Lyle, Gerry Burnette, Tyrel Stephen, Kymani Sealey, Ezekiel Rowland, Solomon Austin, Matrim Martin, Rodensio Tudor, Kyle Reid, and Nathaniel Pydana.
The statistics are indicative of Surinamese dominance, as they outshot Guyana 22-5. They also registered nine corner kicks, compared to Guyana’s one.
Guyana fell behind in the seventh minute, as Robinio Pinas scored.
The Golden Jaguars fell further behind in the 35th minute, as Jermaine Rijssel etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
The Golden Jaguars eventually reduced the deficit in the 76th minute via a Matrim Martin conversion. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished, as Suriname recorded two goals in the space of four minutes.
Djaier Prijor restored their two-goal advantage with an 85th-minute strike. The result was then sealed in the 89th minute as Donagay Misidjang netted.
With the loss, Guyana drops to fourth place and remains on a point. Guyana will conclude their campaign tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. against the Turks and Caicos. In the other game of the group, Antigua and Barbuda defeated Turks and Caicos 2-1.
Guyana finished third in Group D in the 2022 edition of the qualifiers, ending with a record of one win, one draw, and a loss for four points and a goal differential of -1. In the 2020 edition, Guyana ended in second place in group ‘A’ of the qualifiers with a record of three wins, a draw for nine points, and a goal differential of +10.
