The Golden Jaguars ended their group B campaign in the CONCACAF Men’s U20 Qualifiers with a 2-1 victory over cellar occupant and winless outfit Turks and Caicos yesterday at the Antigua and Barbuda Training Centre.
It was the first victory for the Guyanese, whose starting XI comprised Julien Casimir, Gerry Burnette, Tyler Lyle, Tyrel Stephen, Kymani Sealey, Solomon Austin, Ezekiel Rowland, Matrim Martin, Brandon Khedoo, Shemaiah Samuels, and Nathaniel Pydana.
Rowland bagged a brace in the 32nd and 55th minutes. For the loser, Emmanuel Martin netted in the 90th minute.
In terms of statistics, Guyana outshot the Turks and Caicos 24-7, while they also recorded eight corner kicks to their opponent’s two. With the result, Guyana finished on four points with a record of one win, two losses, and a draw.
Guyana went down to Antigua and Barbuda 0-4 in their opening fixture but rebounded to draw 2-2 with El Salvador in their outing. However, the Golden Jaguars were eliminated from advancing after losing 1-4 to Suriname in their previous fixture.
In the other match of the group, El Salvador crushed Suriname 3-0.
Guyana finished third in Group D in the 2022 edition of the qualifiers, ending with a record of one win, one draw, and a loss for four points and a goal differential of -1. In the 2020 edition, Guyana ended in second place in group ‘A’ of the qualifiers with a record of three wins, a draw for nine points, and a goal differential of +10.
