Region Two educators are still supporting the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) as they continue their strike for better remuneration and collective bargaining.
As the protests complete week four, the region’s teachers continue to assemble under two big tents next to the Anna Regina high bridge and also in front of the Anna Regina Town Council holding placards.
They were told by union representatives of the High Court court order for mediation between the GTU and the Ministry of Edu-cation. The teachers asserted that they remain positive that the outcome will be for the betterment of all teachers.
“All we want is a livable wage to match up the rising cost of living. everything gone up in this country in the supermarket except teacher’s salary,” one teacher said.
“The money we getting is insufficient to take care of our families. we need to survive we are teaching the nation children why we can’t get a decent salary,” another teacher lamented.
The educators are still optimistic that the Ministry of Education and the GTU can come to a mutual agreement where all parties will benefit.
However, they express-ed their determination to continue to strike until they are given a better salary.
