Region Two farmers on Friday received agricultural tools and livestock in fulfilment of a commitment made by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha some time ago.
A Department of Public Information (DPI) press release said some of the items distributed were water pumps and sprinklers, knapsack sprayers, tillers, shade house materials, mist blowers, pigs, breeding bulls, sheep, and black giant chickens.
The distribution of the agricultural inputs, the release said, forms part of a commitment made by Mustapha, during several recent engagements with farmers along the Essequibo Coast. During those meetings, various issues were highlighted and the farmers were enlightened about the interventions they would benefit from as a result of this year’s trillion-dollar budget, it added.
Director General of the ministry Madanlall Ramraj, who facilitated the handing over of the inputs on Friday, was accompanied by the vice chairman of Region Two and staff of the ministry.
Farmers expressed gratitude to the government for the distribution of the farming supplies and continued support, aimed at transforming the overall landscape of the region, the release said.
Additionally, Mustapha has promised to provide a tractor to cash crop farmers to prepare their land on the Essequibo Coast, which has already been procured. The delivery is slated to take place in two weeks, the release said.
According to the press release, the farmers will also soon benefit from a portion of the 7,000 Brazilian Green Dwarf coconut trees to expand their production capacity. Mustapha will also inaugurate the Basic Needs Trust Fund edifice for agro processing.
Communities that will benefit from these initiatives include Queenstown, Mashabo, Anna Regina, Dartmouth, Siriki and New Road, it added.
