The defending champion, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), outflanked Buxton United 6-1 in the KFC Elite League at the Guyana Football Federation National Training Centre, Providence, on Saturday night.
The undefeated army outfit opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as Stephon McDonald found the back of the net, slotting home from inside the penalty area after latching onto a cross.
The East Coast Demerara outfit was able to equalise in the 19th minute, as Teshawn Gordon scored, slamming his effort into the back of the net after receiving a pass from the top of the 18-yard area following a poor clearance by the backline.
However, five unanswered goals resigned the Buxtonians to a crushing loss. Colin Nelson restored GDF’s one-goal advantage with a powerful header into the back of the net, rising above his marker to latch onto a corner kick.
Abumchi Benjamin then got into the scoring act in the 45th+2 minute to make it 3-1, finishing into the far corner from the left side of the penalty area. Benjamin then completed his brace following the resumption of play, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 63rd minute.
The score-line then ballooned to 5-1 in the 86th minute as Delroy Fraser scored, while Ian Dooker sealed the victory with a 90th+2 minute conversion. Meanwhile, the undefeated Western Tigers dismantled Anns Grove 4-0.
The winner of the tournament will receive $2,000,000, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will receive $1,200,000, $800,000, and $500,000, respectively. The event continues tomorrow at the same venue with another round of matches.
At 19:00hrs, Slingerz FC will oppose Fruta Conquerors, while Den Amstel will take aim at Santos in the feature affair at 21:00hrs.
