Dear Editor,
I do not recall who made the statement “Meekness is not weakness, but strength under control”, but it encapsulates a mark (if not the mark) of true greatness.
So often, pride makes one think that to engage in dialogue or consider and adopt views different from one’s own is a sign of weakness. Not at all! It shows that you are strong and secure in your own skin, and can be mature and unbiased enough to try to walk in the other person’s shoes.
I long for the day when we can genuinely put aside pride and arrogance and ethnic lenses, and share in each other’s struggles and pain. Such an attitude will make One Guyana a reality.
I’m glad that the teachers’ strike is over, though we realize that the struggle is not over for a livable wage and other benefits! Teachers provide not only knowledge skills and values, but a protective environment for our children who may be left unsupervised and vulnerable as parents toil for their daily bread.
We continue to pray that destructive pride will be put aside, that we transcend barriers of race, face and place; that care, compassion and camaraderie will come to the fore, and that, in story book style, all parties will “live happily ever after.”
Yours faithfully,
Claudia Heywood
