With the first leg of the Jagan’s Memorial Cycling Road Race done and dusted, cyclists will now turn their attention to the second leg of the event which is scheduled for Berbice on Sunday (March 10) where over $300,000 in cash prizes will be up for grabs.
Briton John, will again be the favourite for the upcoming race after dominating the first leg on the West Coast of Demerara on Sunday last, however, others will be looking to end his streak of wins on the road.
According to Flying Ace Cycle Club’s Linden Dowridge who is part of the organisers of the event, while the peloton has been competitive, he does not foresee a change in results, however, he noted that if one of the stronger cyclists from Team Evolution could happen to keep pace with John “maybe they would be able to outsprint him on the homestretch”.
Junior cyclist Alexander Leung came in for high praises as Dowridge opined; “ little Leung has been in outstanding form and there is an outside chance, if he could sneak an early breakaway and hold his pace, he can bring home a win unlike any other in recent times”.
While the first leg of the Jagan’s Memorial Cycling Road Race spanned just 41 miles on the roadways of West Demerara, the upcoming second leg will see the cyclists’ endurance tested across 70 miles in Berbice.
On Sunday, the cyclists will pedal off from Freedom House in New Amsterdam at 8AM, proceed to Springlands Police Station and return to the Babu John School for the finish.
The winner of the Elite category will receive $45,000 while second through sixth will ride away with $35000, $25000, $15000, $12000 and $10000 respectively.
Over in the Junior category, the winner of that race will collect $25000 with second and third place finishers pocketing $18000 and $15000 each.
The Veterans Open class will see the winner receiving $25000, second place $18000 while third and fourth placed finishers will collect $15000 and $12000 each.
The top placed Veterans 50+ cyclist will pocket $18000 while $12000 and $9000 will go to second and third place respectively.
Additionally, 15 Primes (sprint prizes) will be up for grabs throughout the race.
Following the conclusion of the Berbice leg of the race, the Jagan’s Memorial Cycling Road Race will wrap up on the roadways of the Essequibo Coast on March 31.
