After opening their campaign with two wins in as many games in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) CG United Women’s Super50 Cup, Guyana were handed a four-wicket defeat by their Barbados counterparts who put on an exceptional all-round display at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex Ground in St. Kitts yesterday.
After bowling out the Guyanese women for just 128 after they had won the toss and elected to bat, the Bajans survived a scare to get home with four wickets to spare courtesy of opener Kycia Knight’s unbeaten 69.
Guyana’s skipper Shemaine Campbell led the way for her team making a defiant 53 off 84 deliveries while all-rounder Cherry-Ann Fraser continued to show her ability with the bat, finishing as the next best scorer with 24 while Shabika Gajnabi (10) was the only other batter to reach double figures as Guyana folded on 128 all out in 37.1 overs.
Bowling for the defending champions, medium-pacer Allison Gordon bagged 4-19 while leg-spinner Keila Elliott returned 3-29 and Shamilla Connell had 2-26.
The Guyanese bowlers then put pressure on Barbados who had a tough chase. The Bajan girls rode out the challenge to finish on 129-6 in 41.2 overs to win by four wickets.
The in-form Knight followed up her 90-odd in the last game, with an unbeaten 69 (7x4s 1x6s), providing a stable platform throughout the innings after the Guyanese bowlers tried to dismantle the Barbados batters at the other end.
Kycia’s sister, Kyshona Knight also helped to stem the fall of wickets with 32, as the siblings did the heavy lifting to get their side home across the line.
Niya Latchman (2-19), Plaffiana Millington (1-10), Ashmini Munisar (1-32) and seamer Sheneta Grimmond (1-21) all turned in inspired spells with the ball as they almost successfully defended their low total.
Guyana’s next assignment will be on Monday (March 11) as they take on the Trinidad and Tobago Divas at the Conaree Cricket Centre.
