GFF reschedules Slingerz, GDF elite league matches due to international duties

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Competitions Department has opted to reschedule all the Elite League fixtures involving the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Slingerz between March 13th and 30th due to several of their players being elected for national duties.

This was confirmed by a release from the GFF. According to the correspondence, five Slingerz FC members and four GDF players have been elected for national team training ahead of Guyana’s participation in the FIFA Series in Saudi Arabia.

The release stated, “The postponement of the KFC Elite League fixture adheres to the guidelines outlined in Article 2.32 of Season Six Regulations, which states that ‘if four or more players from a club’s current GFF register are summoned for national duties, that club may request the postponement of match(es) during which said players are called. A request for postponement shall be submitted in writing to the GFF Secretariat no later than 48 hours before the scheduled match day. The GFF Competition Department shall take the final decision on all requests for postponement’.”

New match dates will be announced later. Guyana will face off against Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) on March 21st before opposing Cambodia five days later. Both matches will be staged at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah.

The novel initiative, which was approved by the FIFA Council in 2023, will witness matches being staged within the six confederations during each even-numbered year. The objective of the programme is to afford more international matches and interactions between confederations, which will aid in the overall development of the sport.

The pilot edition of the programme features 20 member associations playing in four locations across three continents. The other three hosts are Algeria, Azerbaijan, and Sri Lanka.
