Gerald Forde,  who believes he is still  the Representative of the List of Candidates for the New Movement (TNM) party, has written Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir about the loss of confidence in Asha Kissoon by their list.

Forde has also issued a notice of recall to Kissoon as a result of consultations with the parties in the three-party joinder List.

The letters, dated March 14, 2024, were addressed to Nadir and Kissoon herself, with the two recipients being CC’d in the correspondences addressed to the other. In his correspondence with Nadir, Forde cited Article 156(3) (c) of the Constitution as the basis for the recall.

The letter to Kissoon read in part:

“This serves to notify you of my decision as Representative of the List from which your name was purportedly extracted to recall you from your parliamentary seat with immediate effect.

Respectfully,

Dr. Gerald Forde”

When contacted by Stabroek News for a response to the letters, Nadir simply stated, “Received.” When pressed for further comment, he declined.

On March 5, Forde wrote to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) asking for an investigation of how Kissoon’s name was submitted to Parliament and seeking to have her recalled to make way for Althia King, the elected representative of A New and United Guyana (ANUG), in accordance with a three-party agreement. To date, there has been no response from GECOM and representatives there have declined to comment on the matter.

The recall of  Kissoon from her parliamentary seat has sparked speculation and raised questions about the internal dynamics within the List of Candidates of  the TNM. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the functioning of Parliament.

Kissoon has now held that seat for more than twice her permitted allocation under the arrangement of trust set out in the Memorandum of Understanding and is refusing to relinquish her position.
