Amerindians in all 10 administrative regions will head to the polls on May 15, to elect councils for their respective villages, a release from the Department of Public Information (DPI) stated yesterday.
It explained that these elections, which are mandated by the 2006 Amerindian Act, are held every two to three years and involve the selection of new council members for over 200 villages and communities across the country.
The release however stressed that the election of a Toshao (Amerindian leader) is different from the date fixed for the election of the councillors. Voting is done by a secret ballot.
